Answered: Can you get data off a dead laptop?

You can get data off a dead laptop if the hard drive or SSD drive is still working.

You can remove the hard drive or SSD drive and use a USB hard drive cable for your specific type of hard drive and plug it into the hard drive and connect it to your computer and if the hard drive or SSD drive from the laptop is still good you should be able to pull up the drive on a working computer with the USB cable and retrieve the file and data from the dead laptop.

To retrieve files from a corrupted hard drive you can try using CHKDSK or data recovery software or even use a professional data recovery service.

You should also first listen for any clicking or grinding noises and see if the hard drive is detected by the system.

If the hard drive is detected although shows errors or is unreadable, then it's likely a logical issue.

To use the built in Windows tool CHKDSK to scan and fix errors, open the command prompt as an administrator and type in chkdsk X: /f /r and replace the X with your drive letter.

Data software such as Disk Rill, Recuva or EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard can also be used to sometimes scan for and recover files from corrupted hard drives.

If the hard drive has physical damage or the software doesn't work then you may need to take the hard drive to a professional data recovery service.

You can often recover data from a hard drive that is not recognized.

If the issue is a logical failure such as corrupted file system or malware, then data recovery software may be able to help you retrieve your data and files.

If the hard drive has suffered any physical damage then data recovery services can often retrieve and recover the data from the hard drive which is not recognized.

Although even then if you use a specialized data recovery service, they cannot always get the files or data off.

To retrieve data from a failed hard drive you can sometimes use software based data recovery if the failed hard drive is a logical error.

You an also often retrieve data from a failed hard drive through use of data recovery software such as Disk Drill, EaseUS, Recuva or Wondershare Recoverit which can scan the hard drive for lost or deleted files and attempt to recover them.

Some software can also create an image of the entire hard drive to help facilitate the data recovery process.

You can also sometimes fix a hard drive by using the chkdsk command.

Another way of retrieving data from a failed hard drive is to take the hard drive to data recovery specialist company like Ontrac, Secure Data Recovery and DriveSavers.

Specialized data recovery companies have the proper equipment as well as expertise to repair damaged hard drives to recover data.

The symptoms of a failed or dead hard drive are the data being inaccessible, frequent system crashes, BSOD's or Blue Screen of Death, clicking or grinding noises or the hard drive that is dead or failing may not be detected by the computer BIOS or operating system.

Other signs and symptoms of a dead or failing hard drive are data corruption, slow performance, error messages when accessing of files and even the hard drive not spinning.

If the hard drive is not spinning up then the hard drive could be dead.

Most often a hard drive will start to warn you of it when the hard drive is failing or about to die.

When the hard drive is failing or is about to die there will often be clicking, whirring, screeching or grinding sounds that come from the hard drive.

A significant slow down in your computers speed, especially during booting up, file access and application loading are often a sign of a failing hard drive.

Having scrambled file names, error messages when opening of files and missing files are also signs that the hard drive's storage is failing.

And even intermittent or frequent freezes and crashes of your computer, especially when interacting with files can also signal that the hard drive is failing or is about to die.

A hard drive should last between 5 to 10 years before they go bad.

I found that you can actually change the power settings to keep the computer awake while it's copying. You just have to make sure it doesn't go to sleep during that time. Also, if your computer is running slow or you're thinking about selling it, doing a factory reset on Operating Systems can really help. I did this when my laptop was getting super sluggish, and it made a big difference.

Answered: Can a power surge damage a laptop battery?

A power surge can sometimes damage a laptop battery if it fries the laptop power supply and then sends the voltage spike through the battery.

In most cases the laptop battery will be fine in a power surge but the power supply and sometimes the motherboard will be damaged.

Laptops do need surge protectors as a power surge can damage the power supply to the laptop and even fry the motherboard in the laptop and cause data loss in some cases.

A surge protector should be replaced every 5 years although if your home is frequent to power surges or brownouts and blackouts then you may need to replace your surge protectors as early as every 2 years.

You can tell if a power strip is a surge protector by the joules rating which should be on the packaging or sometimes on the surge protector itself.

Surge protectors will also have another light which is yellow when it is providing surge protection when plugged in.

Most surge protectors work just like a power strip, many times they look like a really buff power strip.

There are outlets for you to plug your devices in, and typically an on/off switch as well.

The difference between a power strip and a surge protector is that a power strip is just a strip of outlets with a cord that allows you to plug additional things into but it does not have any surge protection.

A surge protector is a power strip with surge protection that protects electronics and other things plugged into them from a power surge.

Normal power strips do not provide surge protection.

Some surge protectors are better than other surge protectors depending on the joule rating and a surge protector with a higher joule rating means it has stronger protection against power surges.

A surge protector protects your appliances and electronics such as Television, computers, etc from power surges which can destroy the electronics.

The surge protector diverts excess voltage to the ground wire, preventing it from reaching connected equipment.

A surge protector will not work without the ground as the surge protector works by creating a short between both the hot wire and neutral and neutral and the hot and the ground when a voltage spike exceeds a a certain value above normal.

So without the ground the surge protector will not work.

A surge protector designed for a standard AC power outlet requires a functional ground connection in order to work properly.

The surge protector diverts excess voltage to the ground wire, preventing it from reaching connected equipment.

The yellow light on a surge protector indicates that the protection from a power surge is in place so the yellow light on the surge protector should be on and if it's off it means that the surge protection is not working.

Grounding is a critical element required for proper surge protection.

In regard to the question about whether surge protectors work on ungrounded outlets, the answer is “no.”

Surge protection equipment typically uses components called metal oxide varistors (MOVs) to divert excess current into the ground line.

The red light on the surge protector means that the surge protector is working and providing surge protection.

The yellow light should always be lit, as it indicates that the protection from a power surge is in place.

The green light indicates that the surge protector is grounded.

For maximum protection, you want the surge protector grounded and have the green light on, though it is not required.

When a surge protector flickers it can mean that the surge protector is going bad, has detected a fault or that the surge protector has been turned off.

If the blinking/flickering light on your surge protector is red or orange, it is most likely a power light that indicates that a surge protector has been turned on or off.

If that red or orange light has neon bulbs, they will degrade over time.

This causes them to blink and flicker.

Signs that a surge protector has gone bad include.

Feels hot: A surge protector that feels hot is not protecting your electronics.
Smells of burning plastic:.
Lamps flicker:.
Plugged in but not working:.
Broken fuse:.
It keeps turning off and on.

Also examine your surge protector to see if you can spot a red or green blinking light on the outside of the device.

Please note that this is not a foolproof system.

Just because there is no flashing light does not always mean your device is fine.

However, if it is flashing, you definitely need a new one.

Power surges occur very often.

While standard U.S. voltage is 120 V, the true amount of voltage constantly oscillates between a few volts up to 169 volts it is not until voltage passes 170 V that a potentially harmful power surge happens.

The difference between a surge protector and a power strip is the surge protector is a type of power strip that has surge protection to protect your electronics and appliances from electrical surges while the power strip is just a short type of extension cord with additional outlets without any additional surge protection.

A typical surge protector passes the electrical current along the outlet to number of the devices plugged into the power strip.

If the voltage happens to rise above the acceptable level, the protector will divert the extra electricity into the outlets grounding wire.

It's recommended that you replace power strips and surge protectors every 2 to 3 years.

However you can keep a power strip or surge protector as long as it's in good condition and the outlets are tight and not loose and you have no frayed wires on it.

Power strips can cause fires if the power strip is overloaded or if the power strip is bad.

If you overload the power strip then the power strip can start a fire.

Although if the power strip has a breaker on it then the breaker should trip when you pull too much power from the power strip.

Also never plug high wattage things into the power strip such as a space heater that runs longer than a few minutes or so.

Plugging a hair dryer into the power strip is generally safe as long as you don't run the hair dryer longer than 5 minutes or so at a time.

A space heater on the other hand would be a constant load which can heat up a power strip.

Space heaters should be plugged directly into an outlet.

If the power strip also has a frayed cord on it then it should be discarded and replaced.

A power strip gives you the ability to plug multiple devices into a single wall outlet.

A surge protector is a type of power strip which is specifically designed to withstand a power surge and keep your electronics safe.

As long as you don't overload the power strip or surge protector they should not cause any fire.

Also make sure the outlets are fitting tight and not loose and also make sure the outlet that you plug the power strip or surge protector into is tight fitting.

The loose connection of the outlet can cause the plug and outlet to heat up which can start a fire.

An interesting and important question. Thanks for the recommendation. I am deeply convinced that equipment also needs special care and adherence to the rules of use. I confess howly.com always fascinates me. Just one day they helped me with advice on Troubleshoot BritBox TV issues. I just asked questions that interested me and immediately received answers from professionals. They are available 24/7.
Answered: What temperature is too cold for a laptop?

The temperature that is too cold for a laptop is any temperature below 40 F and when you get down to 30 F or below that becomes even worse for the laptop.

It's not safe to put your laptop in the freezer as the water condensation can cause the laptop to short circuit and damage the screen and circuit boards.

If you're simply wanting to cool the laptop down then you can use a big fan to blow air directly over the laptop to cool it down.

Electronic devices suffer from temperature extremes.

Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) of laptops, phones, and PDAs really do freeze.

Laptops have been designed to work within a safe temperature range, typically between 50 to 95 degrees F (10 - 35 degrees C).

Never leave your smartphone, notebook, tablet, or any other mobile device in your cold vehicle for extended periods of time.

Even with a case, such extended time can cause permanent internal and external damage.

Be extra careful around snow as well.

You can also cool your laptop using a laptop cooling table.

Answered: Can you remove the monitor from a MacBook and still have it function?

Hello everyone, every laptop, like other electronic devices, tends to lose its new look during operation. And this applies to any part of it, and even the keyboard is no exception. Any computer keyboard gets dirty or scratched over time, losing its fresh and well-groomed appearance. Any of us would like to keep the new and aesthetic look of our keyboard. At the same time, it is unlikely that someone will have a desire to wipe it from dust all the time and painfully try to erase stains. The keyboard cover macbook pro 13 will help you avoid such problems. It perfectly protects the computer keyboard from dust, liquid and various other external influences.

Answered: Can I leave my laptop on overnight to download?

If you leave your laptop on overnight, nothing will happen to it as it will go into sleep mode. The most important thing is that the laptop should be closed in this case, so that the keyboard does not get dusty. If you forget to close your laptop, then it is advisable to use a protective keyboard cover to prevent dust from entering. If you are interested, you can read about the effectiveness of such keyboard covers at https://neconnected.co.uk/what-is-the-point-of-keyboard-covers/.

I always keep my laptop computer plugged in when I'm not taking it anywhere and it has never been an issue.

Keeping the laptop plugged in all the time is okay and keeps your battery charged up.

The charging system will shut off when your laptops battery is fully charged so you won't overcharge the battery.

Answered: Do downloads continue when screen off?

Downloads will continue on a laptop or desktop when the screen or monitor is off as long as the computer is not in sleep mode.

If your laptop is a Windows 10 laptop you can prevent your laptop from sleeping by following the below instructions.

Go to Power Options in the Control Panel. In Windows 10, you can get there from right clicking on. the start menu and clicking on Power Options.
Click change plan settings next to your current power plan.
Change "Put the computer to sleep" to never.
    Click "Save Changes"

It's not bad to leave a laptop on overnight as long as the cooling fans are working properly and it's plugged in.

I leave my laptop on overnight when I need to download large files or upload large files or when updates are being downloaded and installed.

However if I don't need it on then I shut it down for the night.

Yes it's safe to leave a laptop on updating overnight.

I leave my laptop and desktop computer on overnight so the updates download and install overnight when I'm asleep and not needing the computer.

I also do uploads and downloads on my laptop at night that are large and by the morning the uploads or downloads are finished.

Just make sure the laptop is plugged in so the battery does not die overnight and make sure the laptop is not set to sleep mode or the uploads and updates and downloads will fail.

Just make sure to keep the laptop from going into sleep mode overnight as when the laptop goes into sleep mode it will stop uploads or downloads.

You can set the screen to go off or hook a separate monitor to the laptop and then switch the laptop screen off and then turn the other screen off as well.

Windows can sleep while copying files but the files can stop transferring when windows sleeps.

Sleep mode means pausing all applications and processes and putting computer on a low power consuming state by turning off processor.

Running an application needs the processor to be active. If you want to save power while still downloading something, just turn off your monitor.

Files will not still download in sleep mode.

All downloads will stop when your laptop or other computer enters sleep mode.

You will need to set up your laptop to keep it running even when your lid is closed for the downloads to continue.

Your computer does not still upload when in sleep mode.

Uploads will be interrupted and fail if your PC goes into sleep mode during upload.

When your computer goes into sleep mode it stops activity such as uploads, downloads and internet connections.

So if you need to keep your computer on to upload files or download files then you can set the laptops screen to go off but still keep the computer on and out of sleep mode.

With a desktop you could just leave the computer on and shut down your computer monitor.

The application will resume uploads even if you shut down during a sync operation.

Files sent there will upload as Internet is connected.

If however you do so from a browser this may not be the case.

Some systems may view this the upload as activity and thus not sleep until the upload is complete.

To keep your computer awake while uploading or downloading files you need to turn the computers sleep mode off.

To turn off sleep mode on a Windows 10 PC, go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.

Then select the drop-down menu under Sleep and choose Never.

If you're using a laptop, do this for battery mode as well.

Answered: Does putting your laptop to sleep damage it?

Putting a laptop to sleep is not damaging to it but if you don't plant to use the laptop for more than 3 hours you should shut it down to prevent it overheating.

Laptops and other computers are designed to be put in sleep mode to conserve energy and make them easy to start back up.

But to save the laptops lifespan it's best to shut the laptop computer down completely if you're gonna leave it alone for 3 hours or longer.

Such as overnight it's best to shut the laptop completely off and then turn it back on in the morning.

Laptops are crammed tight with the heat sink, CPU etc and can overheat when left on overnight and although they are usually okay left on overnight in sleep mode it's best to shut the laptop off.

Answered: Is it better to shutdown or sleep laptop?

Shutting down a laptop when not using it longer than a few hours is much better to extend the lifespan of the laptop and protect it.

On my laptop computer if I'm gonna need it during the day and plan to return to the laptop within 30 minutes to an hour or 2 hours then I leave the laptop on in sleep mode and close the lid.

If I plan to be away from the laptop for more than 3 hours then I shut the laptop down to prevent it from overheating.

I don't use the computer all the time and mostly use my laptop when I'm in the living room, outside etc.

I also have my desktop computer that I leave on 24 hours per day 7 days per weeks so if I really need the computer sooner than expected I can go into my home office and get on the desktop computer to do something that needs done.

Answered: Can you work from home on a laptop?

Yes you can work from home on your laptop computer.

There are several legit ways of making money and working from home on a laptop or other computer and a good benefit of working from home on a laptop computer is that you can take the laptop outside on nice warm days and enjoy the fresh air while working on your laptop.

I like to sit outside on my patio working on my laptop blogging which is a way I make a living.

I've been blogging for 10 years now and make a full time income through Adsense and Affiliate ads.

I make over $10,000.00 per month between Adsense and Affiliates from my blog but you need around 1 million monthly visitors to get to that point in most cases.

The more visitors you have to your blog the more income you'll make.

Blogging won't get you rich overnight though because it requires a lot of hard dedicated work in the beginning for at least the first 5 years.

The first 5 years of blogging I barely made $100.00 per month from Adsense but now 10 years later I'm getting a lot of traffic to my blog and making more than my day job.

The benefit of blogging is that the money comes in whether I'm working or not and all those years of hard work blogging have paid off and will continue to make me money for years to come.

So I only need to write a new blog post every week or every month and I still make money so I work when I want too and I'm not tied down to a job where I have to go to everyday.

Some other ways to make money through your laptop is through Freelance work, run an ebay store, sell and design T Shirts, do Drop Shipping etc.

Or you can start investing in stocks and bonds if you know what you're doing.

Answered: Can A laptop be overclocked?

Yes a laptop computer can be overclocked but it's really not recommended to overclock a laptop unless you want to damage the laptop due to overheating.

A laptop can overheat much more easily than a desktop computer because there's not as much ventilation and airflow like there is in a desktop computer.

The parts in a laptop are also more tightly packed in than in a desktop computer which makes the overheating happen much more quickly.

If you do overclock your laptop computer it will void the warranty and will almost always damage it pretty quickly so unless you have an older laptop computer that you do not care about then I would not overclock it.

If you want to overclock a computer I would use a desktop computer with enough airflow and fans to keep it cool.

Answered: Can you run a laptop plugged in without the battery?

Yes a laptop will work just fine without the battery installed in the laptop as long as you use the original power cord to power the laptop.

I have an old laptop that the battery went bad on and I just removed the old battery and use the laptop on the counter in my kitchen when I want to look up recipes and I just leave it plugged into the power outlet.

The laptop has been working just fine without the battery for a few years now.

The battery when removed does no harm to the laptop except making the laptop less portable but you can still take the laptop with you and plug the laptop into a power source when you have a power source available to you.

There's no reason to get rid of a laptop because the battery went bad and you can't afford a replacement battery as you can just leave the battery in the laptop or just remove the battery and keep the laptop working with the power cord.

Answered: Do cooling pads really work for laptops?

Yes if your laptop is getting too hot or overheating a cooling pad can help increase the air circulation from the laptop and help keep the laptop a lot cooler.

First though check to make sure all the air vents to the laptop cooling ports are clean of any dust or debris that could be blocking airflow.

Dirt and debris blocking airflow sometimes cause a laptop to get too hot and overheat so by cleaning those air passages the laptop will be able to cool down faster.

I do use a cooling pad for my laptop and it keeps it at least 30 percent cooler and increases the performance of my laptop so I would highly recommend you buying a cooling pad to keep your laptop cool.

Yes laptop cooling pads do make a big difference when cooling your laptop especially when the room is a bit hot.

My laptop uses to get pretty hot and even shut down and then I decided to buy a laptop cooling pad for the laptop.

I'm glad I did buy a laptop cooling pad as it made it run cooler and also made the computer faster and my lap stays cooler as a result of using the laptop cooling pad with my laptop.

Also if your laptop does get hot make sure the cooling vents are clean and not clogged with any hair or other debris that could be clogging it.

But then getting a laptop cooling pad will certainly help with your cooling of your laptop and they're well worth it.

Answered: How can a teenager earn money online from their laptop?

There are many legit ways for a teenager to earn money online from their laptop such as taking surveys online for cash, starting a youtube channel and monetizing it, starting a blog and monetizing the blog, do freelance work etc.

Taking Paid Surveys won't make you a lot of cash but you can earn some extra cash in your spare time from your laptop or look for websites such as freelancer and do freelance work that you can do with your laptop.

I also recommend starting a blog on something you love because I now earn around $3,000.00 per month from my blog through Adsense after I blogged for 8 years and built up the traffic.

Blogging won't get you rich overnight but it can make a nice full time income overtime and after years of blogging it can be completely passive income meaning you don't have to do much work once you get the blog established.

Answered: Is it bad to leave your computer plugged in all the time?

Leaving a desktop computer plugged in all the time is normal and what they're built for and I would never unplug my desktop computer unless there was a risk of a lightning storm that could strike and damage my computer.

As for a laptop computer those are safe to leave plugged in all the time as well and the battery will automatically stop charging once it's fully charged.
I also leave my laptop plugged in all the time and when I'm at home near an electrical outlet and only use the battery in the laptop when outside or away from home.

Leaving your laptop plugged in all the time is perfectly fine and keeps your laptops battery fully charged and ready to go.

I always keep my laptop plugged in when I'm at home or near an electrical outlet to keep the battery in the laptop charged up and it's never been a problem.

The laptop contains a circuit that shuts off the charging voltage to the battery when the battery is fully charged to prevent overcharging so it's safe.

Even leaving cell phones plugged into the charger all the time is safe because there's no way to overcharge the cellphone as it will automatically stop charging when the battery is fully charged.

Laptop computers have different wattage uses and it also depends on the wattage of your laptop plug in adapter.

But laptop computers use between 65 watts and 90 watts of electricity which isn't all that much.

So if you leave your laptop computer on for 8 hours per day you wouldn't even use 10 cents worth of electricity per day depending on your electricity rates.

In 30 days you would use around $2.10 per month to use your laptop which is pretty cheap.

If you're gonna completely factory reset the Toshiba Laptop where you want to delete your files and everything then you'll need a new operating system disk and your license key for Windows 10.

You can purchase a Windows 10 operating system disc online through Ebay or create your own bootable USB drive with Windows 10 on it or a DVD of the Windows 10 operating system and then reinstall the operating system completely.

Reinstalling the operating system of Windows 10 will completely delete all files you had on your computers hard drive so be sure to backup any important data before reinstalling the operating system.

When you reinstall the operating system on your Toshiba Laptop it will be like a new computer.

Then you just need to enter your windows 10 license key after installing Windows 10.

Answered: How do I transfer photos from my laptop to my iphone without using Itunes?

There's currently no way that I know of to transfer photos from your computer to your IPhone but for those who need information on how to transfer photos from their Iphone to their computer here's how to do it.

Not sure what operating system you're using but if you're using windows 10 operating system on your laptop you should have a settings app in window 10.

Open the settings app and click on the phone option then click on add a phone and a new window should appear where you can select your country code and phone number.

You should be able to connect your Iphone to your laptop or desktop windows computer either via WIFI or USB cable.

Here's how to connect your IPhone to your Windows Laptop without Itunes.

Connect a USB cable to the Iphone and to your laptop computer and then go to the photos app on your laptop, you can find the photos app by typing photos in the search bar located at the lower left corner of the screen on windows 10.

And then to transfer the photos from your laptop to your computer click on the import button.

Answered: How do you download pictures from your phone to your laptop?

Your cell phone should just plug and play to your computer through USB and your charging port on your phone.

Just take a USB cord and connect it to your phones charging port and then plug the USB end into your computer and you should notice the drive in your folders.

Or something should popup when you plug your phone into you computer and then you should be able to transfer photos from your phone to your laptop.

Answered: How many years does a laptop battery last?

A laptop battery should last up to 4 years which is usually the lifespan of the laptop itself.

But if you use use the battery more with your laptop then the battery could last as little as 2 years.

Most times you'll be getting a new laptop before the battery itself actually fails to keep a charge.

It's perfectly safe and okay to use your laptop while it's plugged in and charging.

The laptop battery won't be affected by using your laptop while it's on the charger and it's best to plug your laptop in to use it when you're near an electrical outlet.

Answered: How long is a laptop battery supposed to last?

Laptop batteries should last around 3 years depending on how often you use the battery in the laptop.

After about 3 years and around 400 charges the battery starts losing it's ability to hold a charge for too long and by 3 years and after so many recharges it's time to replace the battery.
