A portable generator produces electricity through magnetism the same way a regular electric generator produces electricity.

As the motor spins the rotor in the stator electricity is then produced and sent out through the wires.

The generator needs residual magnetism to begin creating the electricity.

The modern-day electric generator works on the principle of electromagnetic induction that was discovered by Michael Faraday in 1831-32.

Faraday discovered that the above flow of electric charges could be induced by moving an electrical conductor, such as a wire that contains electric charges, in a magnetic field.

To maintain a portable generator you should run the generator carburetor out of gasoline when shutting it off and also run the generator at least once per month for 30 minutes to an hour.

Also once per year or every few years depending on how much use the portable generator gets you should also change the spark plug and the oil.

After running the generator for a few days or so you should shut the generator off and check the oil and top off the oil if needed.

Replace the air filter when it gets dirty.

And use Stabil in the gasoline tank as well.

Store the generator out of the weather and start the generator even when it's not needed at least once per month.

You should run your portable generator at least once per month to twice per month for 30 minutes to an hour or longer.

Of course if you use the generator more often then it's good for it.

To keep your portable generator running properly and to ensure the portable generator is producing power properly you should start your portable generator at least once or twice per month or once per week to keep the engine lubricated and to keep fresh gasoline flowing through the carburetor.

This keeps the carburetor from gumming up and needing cleaning.

Also put a load on the generator such as with a space heater, air conditioner, vacuum cleaner etc.

And when you shut the generator off it's best to turn the gasoline off to the generator and let the carburetor run dry.

A generator should be exercised and run at least once or twice per month every month for at least 30 minutes to an hour.

Or longer to keep the generator in good operating condition and to ensure it's producing power.

A generator should be exercised for 30 minutes to an hour or longer at least every 2 weeks or every month at least once per month.

You can exercise the generator more often if you want too as doing so will help keep the generator working properly.

To exercise a generator you simply start the generator and then plug something into the generator and put a load on it.

You should put a good load on the generator if it will run it such as a space heater or generator.

This gets the engine up to speed and helps get rid of moisture in the generator.

Run the generator for 30 minutes to an hour or longer and that is simply exercising the generator.

To keep the whole house backup generator in operating condition and to ensure it works you should start and run the whole house backup generator at least once per month or every 2 weeks.

When you start the whole house generator up you should let the generator run with a load on it for 30 minutes to an hour.

Exercising a generator means to start the generator up and run the generator with a load on it for about 30 minutes to an hour or longer at least once per week to once per month depending on how much usage the generator sees.

When you start the generator up and exercise it you put a load on the generator such as turning on an air conditioner, space heater, saw, lights etc.

You want a good load on the generator so that the generator gets up to speed.

The exercising of the generator helps make sure the engine stays lubricated, the valves in the engine work properly, the carburetor does not gum up with fuel if it's a gasoline generator and it helps to remove moisture from the windings of the stator and rotor of the generator.

Also exercising the generator often or using it often will keep the generators residual magnetism built up so that it can produce voltage.

When the residual magnetism is lost in the generator it cannot make electricity but you can use a battery to recharge the residual magnetism if it is lost.
