Down Syndrome is pretty obvious at birth as the baby born with Down Syndrome will have certain facial features and look to the babies face that shows the baby has Down Syndrome.

Babies with Down syndrome tend to share physical features such as a flat facial profile, an upward slant to the eyes, small ears, and a tongue that sticks out.

Low muscle tone (called hypotonia) is also common in babies and children with Down syndrome.

The signs of a down syndrome baby are.

Flat facial features.
Small head and ears.
Short neck.
Bulging tongue.
Eyes that slant upward.
Atypically shaped ears.
Poor muscle tone.

Down Syndrome babies and people with Down Syndrome have a similar look to their face which can tell you if that person has Down Syndrome.

A baby with Down Syndrome will cry just like other babies will and the down syndrome baby will typically cry as much as a baby without down syndrome.

Down Syndrome is not really more common in one race or the other.

However more white people seem to have Down Syndrome than black people but Down Syndrome is not really less common or more common in one race over the other.

The gender that Down Syndrome is most common is are males.

Boys are the most common gender to be affected by and to get Down Syndrome.

Overall, the two sexes are affected roughly equally.

The male-to-female ratio is slightly higher (approximately 1.15:1) in newborns with Down syndrome, but this effect is restricted to neonates with free trisomy 21.

Heart and Lung disease is the most common cause of death in Down Syndrome people.

Pneumonia and infectious lung disease, congenital heart defect (CHD) and circulatory disease (vascular diseases not including CHD or ischaemic heart disease) account for ∼75% of all deaths in persons with Down syndrome.

The oldest person with Down Syndrome is a Rupert Resident named Bryce Walker who was 76 in 2020 and is now 77 and going on 78.

Stress during the pregnancy of the baby can lead to down syndrome.

Being stressed out during pregnancy can cause complications with your pregnancy and so you should avoid stress when you're pregnant as stress can also cause miscarriage or a stillborn baby.

Down syndrome, which arises from a chromosome defect, is likely to have a direct link with the increase in stress levels seen in couples during the time of conception, say Surekha Ramachandran, founder of Down Syndrome Federation of India, who has been studying about the same ever since her daughter was diagnosed with.

Down Syndrome people can drive as long as they are able to read and pass a written test and drivers test.

Most Down Syndrome people actually live very independent lives and some Down Syndrome People can work a job and do just fine.

Although they will experience learning and developmental delays and possibly health problems children born with Down syndrome can grow up to be independent.

Some people with Down Syndrome are incredibly smart and intelligent.

However some people with Down Syndrome are less intelligent.

I know a person with Down Syndrome that I went to school with and he's actually incredibly smart and is much smarter than I am.

He works as a data center tech and knows his way around Linux and server commands.

Me I cannot learn that stuff but for him it's a breeze.

People with Down syndrome usually have an IQ (a measure of intelligence) in the mildly-to-moderately low range and are slower to speak than other children.

Some common physical features of Down syndrome include: A flattened face, especially the bridge of the nose.

The average lifespan of a person with Down Syndrome is around 60 years.

Although in 1983 and the years before that the average Lifespan of a person with Down Syndrome was only 25 years.

Folic acid can prevent Down Syndrome or at least lower the chances of the baby developing Down Syndrome.

A study done suggests there is likely a link between the Down syndrome and neural tube defects, and folic acid supplements may be an effective way to prevent both.

Neural tube defects are caused by the abnormal development of the brain and spinal cord during early pregnancy.

Alzheimer's in Down Syndrome people is not all that common.

Although around 30 percent of people with Down Syndrome in their 50's has developed or is developing Alzheimer's.

Not all Down's Syndrome people get Alzheimer's.

However those with Down's Syndrome are usually more at risk for developing Alzheimer's disease later on in life.

You can usually tell or detect the possibility of Down Syndrome in a baby using an ultrasound.

Ultrasounds can detect fluid at the back of a fetus's neck, which sometimes indicates Down syndrome.

The ultrasound test is called measurement of nuchal translucency.

During the first trimester, this combined method results in more effective or comparable detection rates than methods used during the second trimester.

2 Down Syndrome parents can sometimes have a normal child but the chances are high that if the 2 down syndrome parents had a baby then it would also have down syndrome as well.

A lot of down syndrome people are actually not fertile and it's hard for them to have a baby.

Down Syndrome is typically caused by the mother although it can also come from the father.

The thing that makes you high risk for having a Down's Syndrome baby is your age as the mother.

Women who are 35 years or older when they become pregnant are more likely to have a pregnancy affected by Down syndrome than women who become pregnant at a younger age.

Down syndrome is usually caused by an error in cell division called “nondisjunction.” Nondisjunction results in an embryo with three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two. Prior to or at conception, a pair of 21st chromosomes in either the sperm or the egg fails to separate.

Mothers age can affect Down Syndrome.

The prevalence of Down syndrome increases as the mother's age increases.

Prevalence is an estimate of how often a condition occurs among a certain group of people.

The reason everyone with Down's or Down Syndrome looks the same is because they have an extra chromosome.

And this extra genetic material affects growth of the maxilla (part of the skull) and the bone, cartilage, and connective tissue in the head, known as the cranial neural crest.

Down Syndrome people stick out their tongue due to a lack of muscle control of the tongue.

Because the tongue is a muscle, and is controlled by other muscles in the mouth, decreased muscle tone can cause the tongue to stick out more than usual.

Several conditions may cause decreased muscle tone, such as Down syndrome, DiGeorge syndrome, and cerebral palsy.

Down Syndrome doesn't typically run in the family.

However if someone in your family such as your mom, dad etc has Down Syndrome or a brother had Down Syndrome then you could get Down Syndrome through the genes.

Another factor of Down Syndrome is the mothers age when she gets pregnant with the baby.

One factor that increases the risk for having a baby with Down syndrome is the mother's age.

Women who are 35 years or older when they become pregnant are more likely to have a pregnancy affected by Down syndrome than women who become pregnant at a younger age.

Most of the time, Down syndrome isn't inherited. It's caused by a mistake in cell division during early development of the fetus.

Translocation Down syndrome can be passed from parent to child.

All 3 types of Down syndrome are genetic conditions (relating to the genes), but only 1% of all cases of Down syndrome have a hereditary component (passed from parent to child through the genes).

Heredity is not a factor in trisomy 21 (nondisjunction) and mosaicism.

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21.

Down syndrome causes a distinct facial appearance, intellectual disability, developmental delays, and may be associated with thyroid or heart disease.
