The cost to replace the fuel pump by a repair shop ranges from $150.00 to $500.00 depending on make and model of vehicle.

On some vehicles the fuel pump costs more than other vehicles.

A new fuel pump costs between $40.00 to $200.00 depending on make and model of vehicle.

If you can replace the fuel pump yourself then you can do it cheaper.

For example I replaced my fuel pump on my 1993 Chevy Silverado 1500 truck last year and I got the fuel pump and sending unit for $45.00 on Ebay.

Then I raised the bed up and was easily able to replace the fuel pump.

However on cars, vans etc you need to drop the fuel tank to get to the fuel pump and in that case it can be hard to do the job if you don't have a good place to work or the tools and then you may want too or need a shop to replace the fuel pump.

When a fuel pump goes out your vehicles engine will stall out or won't start at all.

A bad fuel pump can cause hard starting, starting and stalling, or sudden stalling of the engine as the fuel pump is responsible for pumping the fuel from the gasoline tank to the engine and when the fuel pump fails the engine will not run.

The fuel pump can also cause low fuel pressure and cause surging, stalling, engine hesitation etc.

A clogged fuel filter can also cause the issues above as well.

Low gas can also cause a car or vehicle to stall when the gas level is low enough to be below the fuel pump level.

The gasoline level must be high enough to submerge the fuel pump in the gasoline so that it can pump the gasoline and when the fuel pump is above the gasoline then it won't be able to pump the gasoline.

Low fuel level can also cause the fuel pump to fail and cause the fuel pump to overheat as the gasoline also keeps the fuel pump cool.

A bad fuel pump or bad fuel pump relay can cause a car to stall as well.

Even a bad ignition module bad fuel injectors, bad gasoline, clogged fuel filter etc can cause a car to stall.

A bad fuel pump relay can cause the fuel pump to shut off or not come on when you turn the key on.

When you turn the key on the fuel pump relay activates the fuel pump and allows fuel to reach the fuel injectors and when you're cranking the engine the fuel pump relay keeps the fuel pump on.

Then when you release the key the fuel pump relay keeps the fuel pump on.

The fuel pump relays job is to act as a switch to turn on and turn off the fuel pump when needed.

When you turn the key on the fuel pump should come on for a minute to allow fuel to get to the fuel injectors and then it should turn back off until you turn the key to the start position.

When you turn the key to the start position another part of the fuel pump relay should switch the fuel pump back on to provide fuel pressure to start the car.

After it's running the relay should keep the fuel pump running so the engine gets enough fuel to stay running.

When the fuel pump relay goes bad it may cause the car to not start at all because it's not turning on the fuel pump.

Your engine could also stall out due to the fuel pump relay going bad suddenly and then the engine may fail to start again.

The most common symptoms of a bad fuel pump relay is a no engine start or engine stalling or you hear no noise coming from the fuel pump.

It depends on the vehicle and age. But the average cost for a fuel pump replacement is between $200 and $1,100. I personally had a great experience with the safelite autoglass service. These guys really know their job. In case someone is interested, it is possible to look through the safelite autoglass reviews to find out more about this company.
