The way plants acquire the needed nitrogen is through the ground.

Nitrogen that the plants need is in the ground and the plants absorb and suck up the nitrogen through the soil.

Nitrogen is a part of chlorophyll, which is the site of photosynthesis so it's very important for plants to get the needed nitrogen and if they didn't get the proper amount of nitrogen the plants would wilt and die.
