The safest sleep aid is melatonin.

Melatonin is considered one of the safest over-the-counter sleep aids, with few side effects.

A prescription drug called ramelteon is designed to mimic the effects of melatonin.

However some people need other over the counter sleep aids such as Unisom or Equate sleep aids to help them sleep.

A good substitute for Ambien is Unisom or Lunesta.

There are not actual over the counter versions of Ambien however there are some alternative over the counter sleep medicines that work just as great and are similar to Ambien.

Some over the counter alternatives to Ambien include Equate Sleep Medicine, Unisom, Lunesta, Restoril, Silenor, Rozerem, antidepressants and over-the-counter antihistamines. Melatonin is a natural sleep aid to discuss with your doctor.

Ambien which is a brand name for Zolpidem is used to treat a certain sleep problem (insomnia) in adults.

If you have trouble falling asleep, it helps you fall asleep faster, so you can get a better night's rest.

Zolpidem belongs to a class of drugs called sedative-hypnotics. It acts on your brain to produce a calming effect.

You should take Ambien immediately before going to bed, not sooner.

Do not take Ambien if you have drunk alcohol that evening or before bed.

Do not take Ambien if you are unlikely to stay in bed for the next seven to eight hours.

Ambien CR may help you to stay asleep, as well as promoting sleep initiation.

It usually takes about 8 hours for the affects of ambient to wear off. So by the time you wake up you shouldn't feel groggy.
