Should you turn off the main water supply if your water pipes freeze?

Yes if the water lines to your house freeze turn the main water supply valve off and then turn on all the indoor faucets to relieve the pressure from the ice build up so when it thaws it can help prevent the pipes from bursting.

To prevent frozen pipes get some heat tape and install it around any exposed water pipes that might get cold.

Also leave faucets running at a trickle during extreme cold weather and open up cabinets that have pipes inside of them to allow the heat to keep the water pipes warm.
