If you try to just heat one room with an electric heater and turn down your thermostat to your furnace then it might be cheaper but your house will take forever to get warm and stay at a reasonable temperature.

An electric space heater is good for helping to boost the temperature in rooms that are cooler and away from the furnace.

But contrary to the claims of a space heater saving money that is just hogwash.

An electric space heater running for 18 hours per day can cost you upwards up $2.16 per day. $2.16 x 30 days equals $64.80 cents per month.

And the electric space heater doesn't put out that much heat. You would likely need at least 3 of those electric space heaters in the really frigid temperatures to keep a larger room at around 65 F.

Running 3 electric space heaters for 18 hours per day for 30 days would cost you $194.40 and could be much more in cost depending on your electric rates.

It would be better and probably cheaper to just run the furnace and keep the house pretty warm for what you'd pay for those electric space heaters.

Electric space heaters are not meant for a sole heating source and are really only meant to be used to supplement heating.
