Cost To Replace engine in car?

I have a 2005 Ford Taurus the engine is making knocking noises and I assume needs to be replaced.

What would be the cost of getting a new or even a good used engine installed into this car?

I had an estimate for an engine replacement in my car a few years ago and they wanted $4,000.00 to do the job.

Cost of the new engine was $2,000.00 and then the cost of the labor was the other $2,000.00

I said no way and found another used car for that amount of money.
