When caring for guinea pigs you should wait until at least 3 weeks or until the mother guinea pig weans them off of nursing to avoid any problems of conflict between you and the mother guinea pig.

I would wait until at least 4 weeks to begin holding the guinea pig but don't hold it for too long especially if the mother guinea pig is still around as she may try to separate herself from the baby guinea pigs especially if she smells you on the guinea pig.

Usually around 6 weeks of age the baby guinea pigs begin to lead more independent lives and get more independent from the mother guinea pig.
