Do you pay more in income tax to the IRS when you're married or do you pay more income tax when you're single?

When you become married and you file a joint return on your income taxes your income becomes combined which sometimes puts you or both you and your spouse into a higher tax bracket so you may end up paying more in income taxes if you file jointly.

You can however file separately on your income taxes even if you're married which usually keeps your income taxes lower.
