When a vehicle needs a tuneup it means that you need new spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coil or ignition coils and a distributor cap or rotor if your vehicle is equipped as well as changing your engine air filter.

The PCV Valve and even fuel filter will likely be changed out during a tuneup and a tuneup can mean a lot of other things as well.

Your vehicle shouldn't need a tuneup unless it's been 100,000 miles since your last engine tuneup.

Older cars needed tuned up sooner when they had the carb system but for new fuel injected vehicles they don't need tuned up as often.

Generally, a tune-up consists of checking the engine for parts that need cleaning, fixing, or replacing.

Common areas under inspection include filters, spark plugs, belts and hoses, car fluids, rotors, and distributor caps.

Many of these only require a visual inspection or a simple test.

Most dealership service departments advertise their ability to “service all makes and models.”

However, many places get service at competitive prices, ranging from $40.00 to $150.00 for a minimal tune-up that replaces spark plugs and spark plug wires.

Signs that your car needs a tuneup include.

Decreased Fuel Mileage.

Fuel mileage is quite difficult to monitor unless your vehicle has an MPG monitor, but if you've been driving your vehicle a while you should notice this drop in fuel efficiency.
Weird or New Noises.
Diminished Braking Capacity.
Engine Refusing To Start.

Older vehicles typically needed a tuneup every 33,000 miles but newer cars and vehicles don't need a tuneup that often anymore.

A newer vehicle today can go up to 100,000 miles without needing a tuneup.

A tuneup will usually involve the changing of spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel filter, air filter and if your vehicle is equipped with a distributor cap and rotor then those will or should be replaced as well.
