Whirlpools in the sea happen when two currents in the sea that are opposing meet each other.

When the two opposing currents meet it causes the water to spin around and around so rapidly that it creates the whirlpool in the sea.

For huge Whirlpools in the sea they're most commonly caused by the powerful tides in the sea.
