In most cases it only takes around a day for the employer to conduct the background check but sometimes if they're doing a more thorough background check it can take as long as 5 days depending on how many applications they're going through for the job.
They want to know your employment history, criminal history, driving records etc and make sure everything you're telling them on your application is true and correct.
