You can only file as head of household on your taxes if you're single or separated from your spouse through divorce.

When you file jointly when married you usually get a bigger tax refund than if you file the taxes as married filing separately .

Married filing separately usually results in a lower amount of money when your tax refund arrives.

It's much better to file jointly if possible instead of separately to get a bigger tax refund.
