If you miss the connecting flight and you've already checked your luggage then your luggage would be on it's way to the destination and if you go immediately to the check in desk at the airport you can likely get on the next flight and meet your luggage at the airport then.
The airport should hold your luggage for you until you arrive at the destination airport and you should be able to pickup your luggage then.
