If you cash a check from someone and it turns out to be a bad check then the bank will send you a letter with the bounced check number and will charge you a bounced check or returned check fee which can cost you money yourself.
Bounced check fees can range for $5.00 to $50.00 per bounced check.
The bank will also deduct the amount of the bounced check from your savings or checking account which is why the bank will want you to have a checking or savings account with them with sufficient funds to cover the check you cash.
